THE STUDIO AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE AND CODA PRESENT
MUSIC FOR THE EYES FEATURING CODA
Enter the salon of Eric Satie as Aria-nominated musicians CODA pool creative forces with over 20 independent artists at The Studio. Let CODA and their friends take you into a world of music and performance inspired by artist, composer and philosopher Eric Satie; a world where the acoustic becomes electronic and the classic becomes modern.
Just as Satie incorporated the talents of his early 20th century contemporaries Picasso, Cocteau and Duchamp, CODA joins with CODApendant Showgirls, opera singers, spoken wordartists and aerial performers to pay homage to the great French impressionist.
“Satie was an eccentric fellow with a fantastic imagination,” says CODA’s Nick Wales. “We love his philosophy that music is to be seen as much as it is to be heard, CODA’s music tries to reignite a depth that seems to be missing from a lot of music today.”
CODA are joined on stage by musicians Veronique Serret (Australian Chamber Orchestra), Jessica O’Donoghue (Opera Queensland), Tim Constable (Synergy Percussion) and Maya (Pony Club Massacre) as well as aerialist Imogen Kelly, NIDA teacher Kevin Jackson and performance artist Elena Knox.
A forerunner to minimalism, Satie’s compositions experimented with what he called furniture music; music to be played in the background rather than listened to. His music was largely forgotten until the 1960s but has since surged into popularity and been sampled across many ambient chill-out albums.
